Its December 9th! COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Happy Friday! SIPA students are finishing their semester. Finals are around the corner and then many will go home for the holidays, some will attend the Annual DC Career Conference, while others may travel and begin work on their capstone projects. The halls may be quieter without the chatter of faculty and students but our Admissions Office will remain busy as we begin to match documents to applications. The deadline for fall 2012 admission consideration for our MIA, MPA, and MPA-DP programs is quickly approaching. The application and all required documents must be submitted to our office by January 5th, 2012⦠a little less than a month away. The sooner an application is submitted, the better. Once an application is submitted and the fee is paid we print the application and start a file in our office. This will allow us to track documents associated with each application. Applicants can then view the documents received by logging in to the application site. The tracking process does not begin until an application is submitted. Submitting your application well before the deadline will ensure that we have the most time possible to communicate with you and can start reviewing files soon after the January 5th deadline. 1. Despite the democratization movements in Latin America and Eastern Europe in 1980s and 90s, Middle Eastern authoritarian regimes proved to be resilient. Despite the recent Arab Spring protests, most Middle Eastern nations live under authoritarian regimes. How do these authoritarian regimes survive for so long? What are the factors that contribute to their longevity? Most Eastern European countries that were part of the Eastern bloc, after the fall of the Berlin Wall began the transition process started by the changes in social system and started to connect into the European Union. Although some of these states essentially have not changed, however, public discourse is certainly different, the market has been liberalized, and states such as Romania and Bulgaria are even members of the European Union. In the Middle East the situation is totally different. Rulers of the dynasties, kings, in this part of the world ruled for decades and there are no indications that the situation might change. Some of them not even the Arab spring (which was simulated process of social change) has managed to waver. This primarily refers to the rulers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the Emirates. Debate of Gore/Bush Free Essays
Gore believes that teachers should be able to have one on one sessions with their students and in order to do so he believes that classrooms should be smaller and more teachers should be hired. In order to hire more teachers he believes that teachers who teach a subject which was their own major should receive a bonus. He feels that education is important because ââ¬Å"the students of today build the economy of tomorrow. He believes that we should slowly move step by step towards universal health coverage. He spoke of tax credit for individual health plans and an encouragement to businesses to give health care twenty-five percent credit. Bush is opposed to a national health care system. He stated that in the eight years that Clinton and Gore served nothing was done about medicare or social security. Bush also believes that Goreâ⬠s plans for healthcare cannot be carried out with our countryâ⬠s budget and Bush believes Gore is a big spender. Bush stated how he provided health care for everyone in Texas and how a national health care plan would fail. I feel as though both candidates were pushing to get all of the issues in within this last debate and that made them not have much backup for all of their statements. I think this was just a ââ¬Å"playground argumentâ⬠between the two candidates. They both were trying to say they were the better candidate but they truly did not give us a reason why. Both candidates seemed to have some optimistic ideas for America but I just donâ⬠t see how some of their bills and plans would ever work. Although the debate did not show a good turnout for me I still feel as though Gore has more intelligence on his behalf and has exactly what America needs to expand us technologically. The short story Use of Force shows the forces of nature clashing in man vs. man conflict and physical conflict Essay The short story Use of Force shows the forces of nature clashing in man vs. man conflict and physical conflict. This conflict is also seen in Wuthering Heights and is displayed through the positioning of the reader by the narrator. In both these texts, this conflict à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ Both Bronte and Williams effectively position the reader to accept or reject characters, through the narrator, which helps the reader in relating with situations and understanding conflict. This happens at the beginning of Use of Force when the reader is positioned to admire and feel compassion for the child Mathilda, Unusually attractive little thing, and as strong as a heifer in appearance, but her face was flushed, she was breathing rapidly and I realized she had a high fever. Paragraph 4 This device allows the reader to feel for the sick child and easily understand the unsaid conflict between her and the doctor. In Wuthering Heights a similar method is used by Bronte, when describing characters. For instance, Joseph was an elderly, nay, old man, very old, perhaps, though hale and sinewyà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ looking in my face so sourly Chapter I, page 4 By putting in sourly, Bronte has put the reader into a position where they reject Joseph, as he seems to have a negative personality where he doesnt conform. This is demonstrated more throughout the story. Man vs. man conflict is displayed very effectively through the parallel of the child vs. the doctor in Use of Force. Mathilda is scared of the doctor and becomes defensive when he tries to open her mouth. This unco-operative behaviour forces the doctor to turn physical, and on approaching her, she too gets physical, She knocked my glasses flying and they fell although unbroken, several feet away from me. Paragraph 13 This physical conflict is also explored in Wuthering Heights between Hindley and Heathcliff. Heathcliff takes Hindleys physical abuse and doesnt retaliate, instead Coolly the child gathered himself up, and went on with his intention, exchanging saddles and allà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ Chapter IV, page 40 This is different to Use of Force, where the doctor goes to use physical force on the child and she herself uses it, in retaliation. Instead of Heathcliff physically retaliating, he waits and takes more suspended, built-up revenge later on. Two conflicting parties with two completely different motives are found in conflict. In Use of Force this is the case with the doctor and the child, where by the doctor wants to examine the childs throat and the child wants to be left alone and keep her throat secret to herself. At the same time these divided parties appear to be worthy opponents. Although they are in conflict with one another, the Doctor shows admiration toward the child for her sheer determination to prevent anyone knowing she has Diphtheria. This is also the case in Wuthering Heights where Catherine is in conflict with Isabella, as they both love Heathcliff, yet Catherine shows admiration toward Isabella for continuing her pursuit of him and finally marrying him. Emotive language and descriptive passages suspends the readers emotions and creates a means to put across the concept of conflict successfully. Chapter XX, page 332 After this point, the major man vs. man conflict has been resolved, as Heathcliff is no longer able to take revenge out on anyone, yet the traumatic experiences of the past can still affect everyone. Although conflict reached a climax point and was somewhat resolved in both Use of Force and Wuthering Heights that post mental and emotional influences could still affect the characters. The violation of her rights, resulting from the conflict taking place, may also influence her behaviour in the future. The experience may also lead her to never trust adults or doctors and again, including her own parents. In Wuthering Heights, there isnt so much psychological or emotional pain that will greatly influence characters behaviours in the future, instead there is a feeling of closure toward a hectic time, while Heathcliff was alive. The successful writing style shown by Bronte and Williams in their stories is effective in engaging the audience and illustrated conflict. Both authors have demonstrated man vs. man conflict and as the audience I have gained a much better understanding of conflict after reading these stories.

10 Facts on White Collar Crime for a Research Paper White Collar crimes are financial crimes which are non-violent in nature and crimes that fall under this category are usually committed by personnel working in business or governmental organizations. Despite their non-violent nature, do you know that corporate crime in the United States causes far more damage than all the street crimes combined together? For those who dont know and are in need of hard facts, here are some statistics on white collar crime and its effects to the global community. Corporate crime results in more collateral damage than all the street crimes such as robbery, individual credit card scams, and burglary incidents if classified under one category. Putting numbers to this fact, the FBI crimes statistics unit estimates the financial losses from street crimes to approximately $3.8billion yearly while losses from corporate crime from only the healthcare industry, amount to approximately $100 to $400billion yearly. The Saving and Loans crisis which affected the Federal Savings and Loans Insurance corporation and the Resolution Trust Corporation racked up an unprecedented 400 to 500 billion dollar loss as well as the failure of a third 1043 of the 3234 savings/loans association in the United States. Corporate crimes lead to violent crimes in many situations and here are the numbers to back it up. The FBI states approximately 16000 people die yearly as a result of direct violence done to their person while approximately 56000 people die due to work related incidents or occupational diseases such as black lung cancer. It is important to note that this figure does not take into consideration the thousands that die from hospital malpractice, and hazardous consumer products or bureaucratic negligence. To better understand the survey, here are the parameters used: A scale of 0 to 7 was used as the measurement scale, with 0 representing not serious while 7 represented very serious The survey saw car theft rated as the least serious crime at 4 while murder was the most serious offense at 6.89. According to the survey, corporate crime was more serious than Car theft but somewhat less serious than murder. The respective scores for the different types of white collar crimes where: Deliberately Omitting Safety Reports at 6.18 Insurance fraud at 5.83 Hacking into corporate databases at 5.6 and Embezzlement at 5.18. White collar crime arrests also spring a few surprises when one considers the percentage it contributes to the overall population arrested in the United States. Statistics from the FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) show you that out of the 14.1million arrests processed across 10,974 agencies, 458, 946 were related to corporate crime. Which means corporate crime amounted to approximately 3% of total arrests. Looking deeper into these numbers we have; 118, 455 arrested for forgery, 321,521 for fraud and 18,970 arrested for embezzlement. The white collar crime demographic in the United States has also been mapped out by the FBI and statistics show that the south contributes a larger percentage to white collar crime than any other region in the United States. These are the facts: An analysis of 10.4 million arrests through the country contained the following information; 37,328 arrested on forgery and counterfeiting were made in the south, the West accounted for 23,410 arrests, the Midwest 13,984 while the Northeast accounted for 12,624 arrests. Also, the numbers for fraud and embezzlement follow this pattern. For fraud; the south leads with 140,271 arrests, followed by the Midwest 34,401, the Northeast with 34,093 arrests and the West with 22,856. Statistics on white collar crime emanating from cities, suburbs and metropolitan areas create no surprises and buttresses the fact that white collar crime occurs predominantly in cities where more commercial and governmental agencies are located. The numbers show that from the 10.4 million arrests analyzed, 64,874 people were arrested for forgery and counterfeiting in cities, 34,552 from suburban areas while metropolitan areas made up 14,944 arrests in 2005. Statistics on fraud are also not different. Arrest on fraudulent crime in cities accounted for 120, 631 of the total number, suburban areas were close behind with 115,295, metropolitan areas had 70, 881 arrests while non-metropolitan areas experienced 40,209 arrests. Analyzing white collar crimes and offenders age group points out the fact that adults are the more active party participating in white collar crimes when compared to teenagers. This is to be expected due to the opportunities and access available to adults who work as professionals in corporate organizations. According to the FBI UCR, data from 1996 showed that 5,433 teenagers were arrested for forgery while 6,947 were arrested for fraud. This is in contrast to the 120,232 adults arrested for forgery and 150,245 arrested for fraud. Another interesting fact from the FBIs research on white collar crime showed that these criminal activities among teenagers sharply declined in later years. In 2005, only 2,600 people under 18 were arrested for forgery which was a 52.1% decline when compared to 1996 while the 2005 numbers for fraud was 4,779 which led to a corresponding decrease of 32.1% compared to 1996 figures. Comparing white collar crimes and offenders gender brings to light another unsurprising fact. Men are more likely to be involved with white collar crime than women. A 2013 review of white collar crimes in courts across the United States concentrated on 483 defendants taking part in 83 representative cases showed that: Less than one in ten offenders from the 483 defendants were women. Storey (2007) shows the detailed differences between Personal Management and HRM in his twenty seven points of differences where he categorized the elements into four-part basic outlines. In this marketplace different companies of an industry are experimenting all possible and available resources to achieve the competitive advantage. But it is human resource that can offer additional featur es to a business through a continuous development process. Thus, the task of people management is not limiting rather its expanding. A dynamic human resource management body can attract the best bunches of talent by designing and offering exceptional reward and career opportunity package and at the same time it can improve the productivity of its existing resource to the highest level by planning, developing and implementing an effective training and development programme. For instance, Microsoft and Google both have search engines. The number of users using a search engine determines its business success. Help Wanted: How to Attain a Servant Position By the nineteenth century, staff for a household became a necessity for the middle class families. Most had acquired enough wealth to attain servants for household duties. The number of servants kept on staff, and their conduct and appearance, quickly became a mark of status, especially near the top of the class ladder (Hughes 37 ). The popular belief was at least three servants were essential for the household. The duties and conditions of work varied, from the virtual slavery of a young maid-of-all-work to the specialized skills of the servant in an aristocratic household (ââ¬Å"Servantsâ⬠). One way to attain a position was to attend a hiring fair. This was held in September and May, when new positions were entered into for a twelve month probationary period (Hughes 37 ). Usually, Victorians were searching for a specific person who had the capabilities for a specific duty. Most servants did not share duties, therefore when at the fair they needed to have a distinction from the rest displaying their work skills. The prospect would wear an article of clothing or carried a symbol that identified the position they were seeking to fill. Carters and wagoners twisted a piece of whipcord around their hats, while thatches displayed a fragment of woven straw (Hughes 38). In addition to the hiring fair, people seeking such positions could go to servant registries. These agencies printed advertisements that listed available servants, much like our classified ads in todayââ¬â¢s newspapers. However, these agencies were not reliable and charged a sum for the service upfront. Word of mouth was the most commonly used way for a person to find a service job. All reference materials (books, notes, etc. ) shall be closed while taking the exam ââ¬â There are 48 multiple choice questions: ââ¬â (General Knowledge) 33 questions which will test your basic knowledge of history, importance of operations research/management science techniques, model terminology, etc. These questions are worth 1 point apiece ââ¬â (Applications) 15 questions that will require you to analyze screen shots/graphics from Microsoft Excel and interpret information regarding an applied problem. These problems will be very similar to the work you have done on the Excel Exercises and Cases however will not require you to actually use Excel, simply be able to interpret information from the screen shots/graphics. Most of the applied-type problems will be worth 2 points, though some are only worth 1 point depending on the level of difficulty ââ¬â Once the availability period opens, you will have 2 hours to complete the exam.Your clock starts as soon as you open the exam so you must submit the exam within 2 hours of opening it ââ¬â Content: ââ¬â General knowledge on the background of operations research/management science ââ¬â Value of operations research/management science ââ¬â Modeling basics (types, applications, etc. ) ââ¬â Linear programming/Integer Linear Programming basics (difference between the two, building an LP/ILP model, integration of the model into Excel, optimal solution, feasible region, establishing constraints, bounded/unbounded solutions, sensitivity analysis) Network Modeling basics (the Transshipment Problem, nomenclature associated with the visual network model, establishing the model, basic forms of constraints depending on the type of problem ââ¬â How to Prepare (**Suggestions**): 1. The readings from the textbook are imperative! Simply using the notes that have been provided in the course is not sufficient; this exam assumes you have completed and have a solid comprehension of the assigned readings from the textbook. . This exam assumes you are capable of developing and interpreting Linear/Integer Linear Programming models, sensitivity analysis (as it applies), and network models (both the development of the model and understanding the graphic representation of the model showing the nodes and arcs). If you have successfully completed the Excel Exercises and Case problems, you should be adequately prepared for the applied portion of the exam.

Students would also participate in the survey process, giving perception of their needs. These surveys would be a form of data collection necessary in addressing needs that could otherwise be unknown. Following this, a meeting with potential group members would take place individually. The students would be informed about the group and what they may gain from it. Expectations, participation and confidentially would also be discussed. From these meetings, the counselor would then be able to determine the studentââ¬â¢s interest level and seriousness of need or participation.
